Qatar Elected To The International Civil Aviation Organization
October 30, 2022
For the first time in its history, the State of Qatar has been elected as a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (“ICAO”) at the 41st session of the ICAO which took place in Montreal, Canada. The membership is for a period of three years starting in 2023 and ending in 2025. Qatar won 160 votes in Group C making it one of the most supported members of its group.
The ICAO is a specialised United Nations agency responsible for creating regulations for aviation safety, security, efficiency and environmental protection. It also regulates operating practices and procedures covering the technical aspects of aviation. Qatar’s membership reflects the country’s dedication to finding solutions to the industry’s current and future issues, and comes after Qatar was assigned the Doha Flight Information Region enabling it to control a specific area of airspace over and around the country.
